Overview of Services

The Comparative Pathology Laboratory is a full service anatomic phenotyping and veterinary diagnostic laboratory that provides services for the BCM animal care program and research support for animal researchers. The laboratory is staffed by a veterinary comparative pathologist along with experienced certified histologists and laboratory technicians that specialize in the handling and evaluation of tissues and fluids from laboratory animals.

Histology:  Assistance in proper tissue fixation, and frozen tissue block preparation. Processing and sectioning of both frozen and paraffin embedded tissue. Staining including: routine H & E, Immunohistochemical, and a wide variety of special stains.

Pathology:  Advice and assistance in animal model selection and experimental design, and necropsy and tissue collection procedures. Evaluation and interpretation of slides or scanned images. Scoring and evaluation of oncology models, preclinical toxicity screens, Participation in grant proposals and manuscript preparation.

Histopathology:  Histopathologic evaluation of fixed and frozen tissue sections.

Photography:  Digital imaging of gross tissue specimens and photomicroscopic imaging of tissue sections.

Clinical Pathology:  Hematology with: complete blood counts, blood clinical chemistries, urine chemistry, urinalysis, and parasitiology services.

Infectious Agent Diagnostics:  PCR analysis for Helicobacter, Culture of tissues and fluids for pathogen diagnosis and monitoring of colony health status.

Genotyping:  Transnetyx shipping center for accurate, timely genotyping assays.
